Speak up for 3+ miles of improvements along Rutland, Longhorn Blvd, & Neils Thompson by 10/5

The area of Austin north of Highway 183 and east of Mopac is a hot spot of destinations, including the Pickle campus, the Domain, and the Q2 stadium, as well as the northern end of the Shoal Creek Trail. But it’s a poor area for walking and bicycling. A new City of Austin plan could change that.

The City proposes over three miles of protected bike lanes and new pedestrian crossings and intersection improvements along Rutland Drive, Longhorn Boulevard, and Neils Thompson Drive. The plan as presented would be a significant step forward and shows just how far the City has come in recent years in advancing bold yet sensible transportation safety improvements.

We strongly recommend taking the City’s survey before the October 5th deadline and supporting this project.

Feedback to consider for making the plans even better:

  • Prioritize safety over speed at major intersections, including Lamar and Burnet, by including protected intersections for people on bikes

  • Create bike lanes wide enough to enable side-by-side social cycling with enough space for another cyclist to overtake

  • Ensure high-quality, durable bicycle lane protection

  • Install wayfinding signage pointing to Q2 and other destinations and guiding people on bike and foot between Longhorn Boulevard and Rutland Drive

  • Install benches at key locations, such as at the southern terminus of Neils Thompson Drive and in shaded spots
