Austin City Council approves study of Safe Streets Austin’s CityLeap plan

Yesterday, Austin City Council unanimously voted to approve a staff study the Safe Streets Austin-backed CityLeap plan. This is a major victory and a crucial step toward implementing the plan and reshaping Austin’s transportation landscape.

The CityLeap plan proposes to address Austin’s transportation, sustainability, and quality of life challenges by converting one or more travel lanes on all Austin-owned arterial roadways of more than two lanes in each direction to either protected bicycle lanes or bus lanes within five years. If approved, CityLeap would be an unprecedented transportation measure, supercharging Austin’s progress toward its transportation, equity, and sustainability goals.

According to Council’s resolution, staff has until July 2025 to produce a report evaluating CityLeap.
