Update: Victory for South Walnut Creek Trail!
Great news!
Thanks to the public outcry over this threat to the Southern Walnut Creek Trail, the Texas Department of Transportation has pulled back its proposal. The revised agenda for Monday's CAMPO (Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization) meeting now states that this item (#10) “will be removed at the request of the TxDOT-Austin District so a full public engagement process can occur.”
We’re grateful to all those who spoke up against this misguided proposal to reclassify the MoKan corridor - where the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad line ran back in the day - as a "principal arterial” (a highway).
Much of the beloved Southern Walnut Creek Trail runs within this corridor, and those portions would likely need to be moved and reconstructed. Many trees and natural lands in the corridor would be removed. And this could also complicate the connection between the Southern Walnut Trail to the Northern Walnut Trail.
