Help fill three crucial walk-bike gaps on Shoal Creek
The City of Austin wants to fill three crucial walk-bike gaps on Shoal Creek between W 24th St and W 34th St. This important project needs YOUR support.
Thanks to community support - including from Safe Streets Austin members - walking and biking along Shoal Creek from Lady Bird Lake to Hwy 183 has greatly improved.
But there are still gaps remaining, and the City is proposing to fill three of them:
South Gap: W 24th St to 2800 Shoal Creek Blvd
Middle Gap: W 29th St to W 31st St
North Gap: W 31st St to W 34th St
The City needs your support again for this important project. Take the Shoal Creek Gaps survey and help make these improvements happen.
Points you might consider making
South gap:
This is a strong proposal that would also include a wider 12ft shared use path.
Consider planting trees in the buffer between the shared use path and the roadway.
Middle gap:
The overall proposal - including a new 12ft shared use path - looks great.
For the 31st & Shoal Creek intersection, either alternative 2 or 3 would be worthy improvements.
North gap:
Eastern part:
Elevate the current on-street section to curb level and make it permanent as a near-term solution, as proposed in options 1 and 2.
Build the north-side off-street path once funding is available, but don’t ever remove the south-side section, which will still be the safer and preferred route for many users.
Please reject option 4, which would leave people on bikes in the street with no “protection” other than speed humps and sharrows.
Western part:
Both options 1 & 2 would be excellent, creating a shared use path on the south side of the street.
NO to options 3 & 4, which would compromise on walk-bike safety.
